Here in San Diego, water keeps getting more expensive and lawns keep drinking it. The good news is you can get paid to trade that thirsty turf for a landscape that's beautiful, low-maintenance, and built for our climate.

As a residential landscape designer serving San Diego County since 2016, I continue helping homeowners all over the area use this rebate to transform their costly, high-maintenance, and monotonous lawn into a natural, living tapestry that is eco-friendly and low maintenance.



How the turf replacement rebate works

Water agencies serving San Diego County residents offer rebates for replacing turf with water-wise landscaping, generally $2 to $5 per square foot (residential), depending on your water district. On a typical 1,500 sqft front lawn, that can add up to several thousand dollars back in your pocket.


Two rules matter most:

  • Apply and get approved before you remove a single blade of grass. There are no rebates after the fact.

  • Your new landscape has to use eligible, real, living plants. Artificial turf doesn't qualify.

How much is the turf replacement rebate in San Diego?

Most San Diego homeowners qualify for $2-3 per square foot through the residential SoCal WaterSmart rebate, with some water districts offering up to $4-5 per square foot when you include eligible California native plants.


Can I remove my lawn first and apply after?

No. Every program requires approval before you start. Your grass, even brown and/or dormant grass, must still be in place when you apply.


Does artificial turf qualify for the rebate?

No. The programs require eligible living, drought-tolerant plants. That's good news the pollinators and your wallet.


Do I need a landscape designer to get the rebate?

Not necessarily. The application requires a landscape layout and projects get rejected for missing requirements. A residential landscape designer gives you plans that comply with the program and a garden you'll enjoy.
